DISCUSSION

1. Is eating plant-based meat bad for our body?

Due to the environmental changes, global warming and the world food crisis become more and more serious, plant-based meat has been much more popular than before.

Eating with plant-based meat can decrease the release of greenhouse gases, then we can prevent the global warming. Obviously, isn't plant-based meat a good product to decrease the negative effects in our environment?

Some studies pointed out that a high-sodium diet is the main cause of chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and kidney disease. However, the sodium content of the plant-based meat is high, every 100 grams of plant-based meat is as high as 300 mg. According to the National Diet Index Manual issued by the National Health Administration, the sodium content of each meal must be controlled below 800mg, and the sodium content of a piece of plant-based meat has exceeded one-third of the amount of each meal.

In fact, meat has a lot of sodium content after seasoning. Every 100 grams of meat contains more than 300 mg of sodium, or even 500 to 600 mg of sodium, which is higher than the sodium content of plant-based meat. Because meat is cooked with additional salt, so the final sodium intake is actually similar to plant-based meat   In other country, 36 adults were recruited for an experiment, trying to replace meat with plant-based meat as the experimenter's daily protein intake source. They found that the experimenter’s body weight, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and heart rate the risk of vascular disease decreased. Compared to meat, plant-based meat has similar nutritional and health value. To conclude, plant-based meat doesn’t cause negative effects on the body.

2. Is plant-based meat environmentally friendly?

There are many things that you can consider if you want to talk about the issue of environmental protection from our daily diet. For example, how food is produced from farm to table? It includes the cover area of the farm, the procedure of planting crops, the animal feeds, food processing, and transportation. And the way it's sold, how it's packaged, what's left on our table, and what's left in the kitchen.

Would it be more environmentally friendly for us to think about plant-based meat in terms of food production? Yes! There is no doubt about the environmental protection of plant-based meat.

According to "CNBC", the Beyond burger, which was the Co-branding products of Beyond Meat and McDonald's,  reduces 90% of greenhouse gas emissions, 46% of energy consumption, and reduces  99% of water use and 93% of land use.

The carbon emissions are far lower than that of animal husbandry, so we can boldly infer that plant-based meat is more environmentally friendly than meat.

3.  How to effectively promote plant-based diet?

Recently, there are three situations that make plant-based meat become a current trend. First of all, because of global climate change, humans and wild animals face new challenges for survival. And reducing carbon emission became a worldwide consensus. Then, the world population keeps increasing.

According to the UN( the United Nations), in 2050, the world population may grow to 9.7 billion, the requirement of food will increase about 75%, which may cause food shortage. Finally, when modern people got a better lifestyle, some of them started to focus on their diet and health, wanting to find a balance between eating less meat and joy eating. Instead of replacing meat, plant-based meat can make people get another choice and it’s a complementary concept. If humans understand these views, they might get a higher intention to accept plant-based meat.
